August Bee Blocks

Until I have some bigger things to show, I thought I'd share some pictures of my recent quilting bee block creations.

In the {Bee} Imaginative group, Kate asked for large square-in-square blocks. She is going to cut all of her blocks into quarters and then rearrange them to make a modern bento box quilt. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

And in my other bee, Buzz Cuts, Kathy asked for blocks to make her 19 year-old son a green, blue and black quilt. I found these fabrics in my stash that fit the bill perfectly.

I'm finding it much easier to keep up with my bees now that I've cut back to just two of them. I even have time to work on fun little projects like this one: an itty-bitty mini quilt for Kim (aka meangirlie), the VP of our Triangle Modern Quilt Guild.

Mini for meangirlie

Why? Just because. We worked a booth together at Maker Faire a few months back, and we were both pulling these little scraps out of the giant scrap bin we had in the booth. I stuck them in my bag and decided to surprise her with a little homemade gift.

Have you made anything lately, "just because"?

  1. Oh I like the 1st block the blues are gorgeous. I'm considering doing modified bento blocks for my month (feb) in the bee I'm in (fresh modern bee 2). I was wondering how to go about it in terms of getting the variety in the bento blocks - I'd not thought about getting the blocks returned in full and then cutting them myself. D'Oh! Problem solved me thinks! Thanks.

  2. You always use such vibrant and fun colors and fabrics. Yes I do things "just because". Right now I am working on a quilt for one of my coworkers made out of her old scrubs. I didn't like it at first because I am used to working with fabrics that have pattern...and...the design I chose was just too bland, boring and unimaginative. I have now given it a more wonky look and think I will be much happier with the results.

  3. yep, i have :) a fun little small quilt-

your blocks are great, and i love your mini quilt! :) i'm sure the recipient will love it too!

  4. Always! I just make a super fun 'mug rug' with my fat quarterly quiltalong scraps off the end of each jelly roll strip. I fell in love with the Hunky Dory line as I was piecing my blocks and just couldn't ditch those ends...so they became this:

  5. I especially love the second block -- what is the block called (I'm looking for instructions but I don't know how to search for it!). Thanks :)

  6. Always, it is nice to take a break from the "to do list" and the projects you feel you have to get done. Currently I am working on a Apple Core quilt that I am completely doing by hand, just for the fun of it. :)

  7. i like to think of myself as "the luckiest triangle modern quilt guild member ever".

  8. *LOVE* the third one down! I ADORE me some birdy prints! That would make great little table mats! :)
