SO excited!

I know I've been absent from this space for a while now. As I've mentioned before, a slowdown in posting to my blog is usually indicative of how crazy the other parts of my life have gotten. This time is no exception. We've been dealing with gross, nasty, icky sicknesses being passed from child to child for the past 2.5 weeks. Work has been crazy busy with some pretty major org changes, business travel to Chicago (sorry to all of my Chicago quilting peeps, but every. single. moment. of my trip was scheduled), and the launch of a brand new website that's been occupying a great deal of my time.

But I did something today that I am just SO, SO excited about.

Have you seen this post on Heather Ross' blog? It turns out she will be teaching a 3-day fabric design course this July at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.

The class is open to 17 people.

And I'll be one of them. Eeeee!

This is something I've been wanting to learn for a while now, but I had no idea where to start. I've also been looking for a good reason to visit Portland for the first time, too. So when I read Heather's post, I knew I had to make it happen. And it's going to happen, thanks in no small part to my mother who is covering the cost of the course as an early birthday present. Thanks, Mom!

I'm dying to know if anyone else reading this has signed up for the course, too. If so, please let me know! Oh, and if anyone has any Portland recommendations (where to stay, where to eat, where to shop, etc. etc.), please do share.

I've got a few draft blog posts in the queue highlighting things I've made over the past month or two, so stay tuned -- I hope it won't be so long before I post again. Hope you're all having a great week!

  4. Hey John! I am totally considering signing up - I guess I had better figure it out soon. My husband is all for it and helping me get going on Photoshop now too so I will let you know - this would be awesome! (And I know P-town pretty well -especially the dining aspect so I am happy to help you there!)

  6. oh how I wish I could go. But then I already make more designs than I can afford to have printed. (and I use Photoshop along with my original art to do it) Still I think it would be great fun.

  15. I'm sure it will be an awesome class!

    Portland is a fabulous city. There's TONS of stuff to do and lots of excellent places to eat. I can recommend a bunch of really tasty happy hour / lunch / dinner places if you would like.

    I'm less sure about places to stay, since I live here... I don't usually put myself up in hotels.

    My must visits:
    Fabric Depot- It's huge- 1.5 acres. About half of that is quilting fabric. https://www.fabricdepot.com/
    Knittin' Kitten- A craft thrift store. It's fun just for a look, but I usually leave with something.

    Voodoo Donuts- If you like donuts, they have a bacon maple bar that is soooo tasty!

    All of these are on the eastside (there is a VooDoo location downtown though) of Portland. If you are staying near the college downtown they are a bit of a ways away. A bunch of Craftster peeps also live here...

  32. Hi John, found out about you through the FB post. I've never heard of a guy who loves to quilt, but I think it's pretty cool. Maybe someday I will give it a try ( as for some reason I still find it pretty intimidating ). What a treat it will be to take Heather's class this summer. I met her last summer & she's very sweet.   33. OMG OMG OMG...This is so cool! I know ALOT of great fabric stores up there and you are going to have SO MUCH FUN!! What a cool class! I am on class hiatus with the baby and all, but YOU WILL HAVE TO TELL US ALL ABOUT IT! I am very jealous, but in a way that wants you to have a wonderful time. I can't wait to hear more about it.

  35. I just have to say, John, that I think you are a little slice of heaven. I just found your blog through Tula Pink (I think) and I've been "catching up" with you this morning. I haven't delved into much quilting (other than piecing a few tote bags and such) but I just may take the plunge!
